DJ Skeez (Hip Hop/House/Reggae/Funk/Soul)
In 2004, Kyle Kentala bought her first pair of turntables, a move that may seem unusual for a roller derby champion, but for her it was long overdue. She was brought up in an era where the sounds of hip-hop, electronic and techno reigned supreme in Detroit, and soon found herself befriending many local DJs before becoming a professional DJ in 2007.
Adopting her roller derby name, DJ Skeez began DJing at a popular Detroit strip club, and found she enjoyed the control she had over a party’s mood. Her ability to balance street and radio hits with classic hip-hop tracks, soon garnered Skeez attention from another local DJ, Bigg Dawg Blast, who in January 2010, invited her to be a part of a collective of turntablists known as the Conglomerate DJs—making her the only female on the roster.
Shortly after joining Conglomerate DJs, DJ Skeez found herself taking her skills to the South and DJing the “Women in Hip-Hop” showcase featuring Miz Korona, Mae Day, Diamond of Crime Mob, Tiye Phoenix, and Bahamadia, at the 2010 South by Southwest festival. Since then, she has worked numerous Detroit events, released her first mixtape, “The Beatdown, Volume 1” and has created and built the Sunday summer event in the city, On Deck.
Not bad for an undefeated roller derby champion from a rural Michigan town.
